The hobbit (1977 animated movie)

My current life is me sorting through a midlife crisis while also trying to get my brain together. I have paranoid schizophrenia and I Think that coming terms with only having so much time left on this planet is making me lash out a bit.

I normally watch the animated hobbit movie once a week. I don’t think it is a masterpiece but I am extremely biased towards it. It is in many ways foundational in what I like.

I think it was animated by top craft and most of the animators went on to work on the nausicaa movie. Though it’s character designs are very much of it’s moment in the post hippie Tolkien craze and it is probably thee definitive statement of the mixing psychedelic haze and gentle mystic perspective of Tolkien that inspired the likes T. rex and the Beatles.

It has some of Zack Snyder sucker punch era problems in that it is paced as a music video. With songs telling as much of the story as any of the dialogue until the battle of five armies where it kind becomes more prose like. Or at the very least less of an impressionistic musical.

I think in many ways the magic of the movie is the strange aura and vibe it carries all the way through. The kind magic and strangeness that the magic demands that most modern movies lack.

So in closing I am far too biased towards deluding myself into thinking I am capable of being objective at all. I think ultimately it takes me back to root of an aesthetic I have been developing sense I Was a kid of a fascination with early seventies war-gaming and rpg culture. RPGs other people seem to have forgotten about like star quest and the kind dreamy prog rock kitsch that the visuals carried with them.

So much is lot and so quickly that we don’t even know it is being forgotten.
